Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some frequently asked questions about the college:
What kind of needs do the pupils have that attend Westgate College?
All of our young people have special educational needs. Many have hearing impairment as well as other emotional, behavioural and medical problems.
What does the curriculum consist of?
All pupils have access to a people-centred, broad balanced curriculum including the National Curriculum. The curriculum is differentiated for our pupils to enable them to build on strengths and interests whilst developing skills and knowledge. Pupils can study a variety of vocational subjects that can help them to gain skills to find voluntary or paid work in the community.
Are there activites organised outside the curriculum?
We organise various activites such as sports and theatre plays. We offer drama and music classes, as well as outdoor activities like gardening and animal care at our onsite farm.
Do you offer specific therapies for pupils?
We have many trained staff that specialise in particular areas like speech and language or occupational therapy. We make sure the particular needs of each person are met.
Tell me about the residential care offered by Westgate College
We provide great residential care. There is a great homely atmosphere and there are trained staff available constantly to manage the residential provision. We ensure each young person is individually cared for and feels at home, whilst maintaining a level of independence.
What support do you offer pupils to progress beyond the college?
We provide our pupils with the support and encouragement to move into other further or higher education after they leave Westgate College. Pupils can also seek employment or voluntary work with the help of our Transition Co-ordinator.
